Why did my battery-operated smoke detectors go off when the electricity was restored after a power outage?
We had a really bad storm, and we lost electric power a couple of times. Every time, the second it would come back on, my battery-operated smoke detectors would be triggered and sound off. Why??
Some smoke detectors require both 120v household power and battery power for backup I suppose. That maybe the case for you. If you want to investigate .... and are sure you wont break something....check to see if it has another source of power.

There shouldn't be any excuses for anyone -- let alone landlords -- not having a working smoke detector in their home, apartment or cottage.
This past week saw another landlord who became the latest property owner charged for not having a working smoke detector on each floor of a rental unit.
Every homeowner should have a smoke detector in each floor, too, and when a fire breaks out, no smoke detector is found to have been working at the time of the blaze, the landlord, the owner of the unit or in cases where the tenant has disabled a smoke alarm, the tenant can be charged.
It was announced Thursday that the owner of a Cannifton Road apartment complex has been charged in relation to a fire at one of the units last month.
Fire officials said two smoke alarm violation charges in relation to a May 30 fire at 579A Cannifton Rd. were issued. The charges are "failure to maintain smoke alarms in operating condition."
Investigation into the fire revealed the latest blaze that resulted in charges was caused by a child playing with a lighter and that there were no working smoke alarms on the premises.
