But instead we found ourselves driving to Guildford and the banks of the River Wey, one of the first rivers in England to be made navigable.
The Wey navigation was built 100 years before the Canal Age, in a valley that runs down to the Thames.
Now it belongs to the National Trust.
We were to take charge of the Hawthorn, a 62ft steel narrowboat, for seven days and our plan was to head down river for the Thames and cruise for a few days.
At Guildford, we parked at the boathouse and listened to a safety briefing. Then it was out to the boat. Hawthorn slept eight, so the five of us had lots of room. There was a comfy double bedroom and our three children slept together in bunks in a bedroom at the stern.
Two hot showers and a hip bath were on board, a neat galley with fridge and cooker and a TV, although we were warned the signal would often be poor.
Even a big boat like ours has very limited storage space, so we had tried to leave a lot at home. Even so, loaded up, every inch of space in the lockers and cupboards was taken. As complete novices, we were taken through the mechanical checks we would need to make every morning and evening.
