Seven hospitalized with CO poisoning

TAMPA - The Tampa Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a carbon monoxide gas incident that resulted in seven people going to the hospital.

It happened Monday afternoon in the 3000 block of W. Gray Street. Dispatched Tampa Fire Rescue crews arrived to the home to find several people in the front yard having difficulty breathing, feeling nauseous, and vomiting -- all symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.

"After forcibly entering the garage from the inside of the house, they did find that car still running," said Tampa Fire Rescue Captain Lonnie Benniefield.

Benniefield says investigators don't know how long the Lexus SUV was left running, but it was long enough that HazMat teams detected high levels of carbon monoxide inside the home.

The odorless, colorless gas can kill.

FOX 13 Medical Reporter Dr. Jo knows too many stories of preventable deaths.

"Here's the thing. Carbon monoxide detectors, they are not expensive. They are very, very easy to set up. It just takes one battery," she said.
