Chainsaws to the rescue
PANAMA CITY — The whir of a chainsaw echoed throughout Camp Herbert Watts, but the 25 men watching the instructors intently as they cut through a fallen tree were not bothered by the noise.
“You have to make tension release cuts in the tree before you cut through it or else it will spring back at you,” instructor Dann Childs said.
The men and chainsaws were out in the woods in northern Bay County learning how to properly use a chainsaw for disaster relief. It was part of the training offered by the Florida Baptist Disaster Relief on Saturday.
The program allows volunteers to become certified in chainsaw training, mass feeding and clean up, temporary child care, administration and emotional counseling and communication. This way, if the volunteers go to a disaster area, such as an area devastated by a tornado, they can present a badge of certification and FEMA, the National Guard or local authorities will let them help.
The chainsaw training Saturday off State 388 along Econfina Creek was Level 1, which teaches the basics of how to use a chainsaw.
ForestApps Blog...: Going Ballistic!
The term ballistic nylon is used to describe the fibers recommended for leg protective (PPE) garments for the chainsaw. It actually is derived from fibers used in making bullet resistant body armor. One of the first and still used today is Dupont Kevlar, a very strong and durable yellow colored fiber. Fibers of this type were first developed and used in belting for automotive tires and other applications requiring reinforcement with flexibility. This reinforcement fiber was heat resistant as well as strong and soon found it's way into leg protection for logging and the US Forest Service. The USFS requires the fabric to be highly flame resistant because of their use related to forest fires....
Husqvarna 531309564 Protective Chain Saw Chaps
These chaps are light and the clips are perfectly placed to keep them from moving about while you are working. They are easy to snap on and off, but the clips are not impact resistant nylon, rather some cheaper brittle plastic that broke when one of my splitting wedges fell from my hand and hit the buckle as the chaps lay on the concrete floor of my shop. I’ve retrofitted some higher quality waist belt clip on them now and am very pleased. My chain saw muffler melted some of the cordura nylon protective cover and I can see the kevlar weave behind this blue nylon shell and so now I can say the kevlar fabric appears to be of good quality and there is a rip stop thread row ever 1/8″. Working in the field has shown them to be very reassuring cheap insurance for me and thanks to their excellent fit and verified fabric quality will keep them on the must have list
