Scenic Loop Road is not as picturesque or loop as it was enlarged and straightened as much as the ground will be permitted. Yet I could not drive by feel alone. The rural route was the lifeline of my life not-so-rural as a child and teenager, a way out, two-lane life of the house to schools and shopping centers and friends. Our own small residential street was pure dirt and still is, our house was piled on a rock floor, wood above, no central air, about a hundred years and not only in the neighborhood. Picturesque. Or primitive, depending on the whims of the plumbing and weather.
A mile and a bit lower: a dead man's curve, where the largest local creek runs under the road. To the right, wavy limestone wall carved by water is now a historic site. There was once a local joker spray-painted a mouth and eyes around the largest stone protuberance. The painting seems to have gone to the last, but the pool green-brown below looks the same, and even opaque.

No matter how much I preach to people the many benefits of using outdoor solar lighting, it seems like there’s always somebody that insists that street, walkway, or driveway reflectors are better. In truth, neither one is better than the other. Each has its own place and each does different things.
It is true that if you have driveway reflectors they will light up like the Fourth of July when you shine your headlights on them. So they are very effective when another light is pointed in their direction, whether it be in a yard or lining the highway. Obviously, though, they are pretty much useless when the car has been turned off and there is no light present for them to reflect. Will they light a pathway for visitor safety? No. Will they glow all night to frustrate would-be thieves? No. Will they enhance your home’s exterior look the same way that a stainless steel solar light will? Of course not. But, as I said, they have their place. Just don’t expect miracles. And don’t expect that electric bill to go down, either.
