Dayton region unemployment drops to 9%
The Dayton-area unemployment rate continued its downward movement in April, falling to the lowest level in more than two years.
The April jobless rate for the Dayton metropolitan statistical area was 9 percent, down from 9.4 percent in March, according to Tuesday data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The last time the Dayton MSA recorded a lower unemployment rate was in December 2008 when the rate was 8.3 percent.
The Dayton MSA includes Greene, Miami, Montgomery and Preble counties. In 2010, the local unemployment rate fell during 10 out of 12 months, only rising during June and October. By year-end the average jobless rate was 11.1 percent, down marginally from the 11.2 percent 2009 average. So far, in 2011, the unemployment rate has fallen each month.
In the city of Dayton, the unemployment rate also showed improvement. The city unemployment rate was 10.1 percent, down from 10.4 percent in March and 12.7 percent in April 2010.
The Montgomery County jobless situation also improved. The unemployment rate slipped to 9.2 percent, falling from 9.5 percent in March and remaining well below the April 2010 rate of 11.4 percent.
