False Alarm Causes Evacuation, Bus Delays

A false alarm detection system gas Ledyard High School caused the school to be evacuated and for high school and elementary bus run 15 minutes late today.

Ledyard schools Superintendent Michael Graner said the fire department crawled through the whole system of tunnels in use in school and did not detect the presence of gas.

"Obviously, something is wrong," he said on the second false alarm in about two months. "They found no problem, which means that we have a problem with the detectors."

Graner said the district will reorganize the entire system this summer.

L edyard Fire Chief Steven Daggatt said that several teams crawled through the tunnels for about an hour and a half with the portable gas detectors.

"In this case, we found no danger," said Daggatt. "We did not find anything, we cleared the system and returned."

The alarm went off around 13 hours, Graner said, and students are not allowed to enter the building until approximately 2:20 pm School is normally dismissed at 14:10and the delay caused the buses that carry up elementary school students to run late.
