Rhode Island lawmakers struggled Tuesday to find consensus on a state budget, keeping tax increases and spending cuts as options for eliminating the state's budget shortfall.
Democratic House lawmakers spent two hours in closed-door talks in an attempt to reach some agreement, and the General Assembly's Democratic leaders continued to negotiate with Gov. Lincoln Chafee.
Lawmakers are running out of time to approve a new spending plan as the July 1 start of the next fiscal year approaches.
Chafee proposed a $7.66 billion budget in March, and legislators hope to announce a revised proposal Friday. House leaders may hold hearings then on the plan.
On Tuesday, House Speaker Gordon Fox said tax increases and spending cuts remained considerations as lawmakers grapple with a deficit estimated as high as $331 million.
"This is an ongoing process. Anything can happen," said Fox, D-Providence. "You always have to look at both revenue and spending.
