One option you might consider is to use LED modules that don't require resistors, like the ones for sale here: http://www.automotiveled.com/ or here: http://www.superbrightleds.com/1157.htm. Those are all plug-in replacement units, so you'll need neither calculator nor soldering iron!

COLONIE -- A seat belt and fire suppression system is being credited with saving the life of a trooper whose parked patrol car flipped after being rear-ended by a SUV towing a U-Haul on the Northway.
State Police gave this account of the crash:
Trooper Christopher Girolami , 39, had been parked behind a disabled car near Exit 2 on the southbound side of the Northway with his emergency lights on. After that car was towed away, Girolami turned off his red lights and was getting ready to merge back into traffic with the amber "arrow stick" still illuminated on the vehicle.
At that point, the SUV, driven by Frank Vasquez , 75, of Monticello, Fla., slammed into the rear of the trooper's car.
Vasquez said he was having difficulty controlling the swaying of the trailer, was distracted and didn't see the patrol car on the shoulder. Both cars went down an embankment and the trooper's car flipped over end to end, landing on its roof in a swampy area. The SUV and U-Haul trailer stayed upright.

I don't run medical calls unless i'm on duty but i am certified in patient extrication and leave my truck parked on the side of the road when i'm working a wreck call and i prefer for it to be seen. Hell the way people are down here though, you can have a vehicle that glows as bright as the sun in the middle of the night and people still wouldn't pay attention to it. I think it's ridiculous that people will cut off an ambulance or fire truck going full code 3 down the interstate without even acting like they saw it, yet when they get behind a slow driver or a tractor going down the road they sure as hell do notice it....
