NEWPORT-With a command post set up at Willow Island Locks and Dam near Newport, more than 400 individuals from local, state and federal agencies conducted a series of drills Wednesday aimed at identifying possible terrorist targets and improving preparedness.
The drills, directed by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, covered nearly 5,000 square miles over Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. Utilized in the drills were several Ohio National Guard Blackhawk helicopters, watercraft from Ohio, West Virginia and U.S. Coast Guard and several state and federal vehicles.
Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. the helicopters flew 44 missions from Willow Island - mostly to and from other dams along the Ohio River. Also, area rivers were patrolled and safety checks were conducted along Interstate 77.
The activity was something local residents couldn't help but notice.
New Matamoras resident JoAnn Stonerock said she brought her grandson, Justin King, 11, who is visiting this week from New Concord, to watch the helicopters come in and leave.
