Neighbors put up with a lot during 'Makeover' build

Jim Marks should probably have been yelling, "Get off my lawn!"

The 81-year-old takes pride in his large corner lot on Dubbers Drive in Newberry Township. He treats the weeds and seeds it. He was mowing on Friday, cutting wide swaths with an old Simplicity riding mower, avoiding the area near the L-shaped metal cattle chute that now lines two sides of his lawn.

This wasn't just one or two kids heading to the bus stop, cutting through his lawn and making a path. This was thousands

of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" volunteers and staff every day.

All hours of the day and night, they marched up the hill and down the hill, past his house. At night, the path was illuminated with large, bright lights.

On top of the hill, a local builder, businesses and thousands of individuals were volunteering to work around the clock -- as they had been since June 19 -- to complete the makeover of the Keefer family home. The ABC-network television show chose the family after learning how 23-year-old Brian Keefer, who suffered a gymnastics injury that left him paralyzed, was restricted to living in the few areas of the old home that could accommodate his wheelchair.
