The folks at Summerhill Pyramid Winery in the Okanagan Valley announced yesterday that their organic and soon-to-be organic wines will now be for sale in boxes.
Yes, you read that correctly. A staple of 1980s wine-drinking in Canada, boxed wine has died out in popularity in recent years, but the folks at Summerhill hope to change that with their new line of boxed wines.
Each three-litre box of the organic 2008 Alive red wine and the organic 2010 Alive white wine will retail for about $60 apiece; a 2008 organic Merlot will retail for $80 per box, and a 2008 Baco Noir will retail for $70 per box. Iif that sounds expensive, remember that the average bottle of wine holds 750 millilitres; in other words, you'll save about $30 per box compared to four bottles of the Baco Noir, and you'll save about $40 per box, compared to four bottles of the Merlot. Plus, the wine is apparently better for the environment, as the boxes are, according to the news release, "eco-friendly."
