When he went to bed around 1 a.m. Thursday, he had just worked 12-hour shifts for two days in a row.
"I was exhausted, tired from my job - a lot of stress, a lot of work to do," Pendleton told the Enterprise in an interview Monday.
He had only been asleep for a couple of hours when Deirdre Yost, who lived directly upstairs from him, heard a smoke alarm going off in his second-floor apartment.
"It was relatively faint at the time, so I think I caught it when the fire first started," she told the Enterprise Tuesday.

Yost was up late preparing for a civil court case. Coincidentally, she only met Pendleton for the first time that night as they both entered the building at the same time. It had only been since midwinter that she moved into Prescott House, a 106-year-old former tuberculosis hospital at the crest of Saranac Lake's Helen Hill neighborhood.
